What is svchost.exe? and what does it do?

Many of us already venture around the Windows task manager on a daily basis to have a look at the processes that are currently running, check on memory usage of some application or also to terminate an un-responsive application. While looking through all the processes in the system, one process that is constantly visible (and usually not just once instance) is SVCHOST.EXE.
