GO Initiated release of Malta’s first 100% fibre network

Reaching speeds of up to 200Mbps, GO has just launched the new rapido service a 100% fibre optic internet service that completely smash previous internet speed limits.

Whilst the idea of a fibre/fibre powered connection is not new, one must note that the current local offerings dubbed as “fibre powered” don’t necessarily mean that the connection relies on a 100% fibre connection directly from the service provider to the user’s home.  Current offers in the market only use fibre optic connections from the service provider’s main servers to the sub service hubs (in lack of a better word) that distribute internet services to each house in a particular area. From this “service hub” onwards, the connection relies on the standard cable connection. This is the first, true 100% fibre connection directly to your home or business.

Trials and testing are already on their way, and so far successful home/business use trials have already been completed in parts of Ta’ Xbiex, Portomaso and St. Julians. Nationwide roll-out has already started with the first planned release in Attard (Tal-Mirakli area).

The rapido service comes in three variants 35Mbps, 75Mbps and 200Mbps which are part of GO’s Home Pack Interactive packages starting from only €55 per month. In addition to this amazing high speed broadband connection, clients are also taking advantage of an unlimited broadband connection, unlimited fixed voice calls to all GO numbers and 400 free mobile minutes and IPTV with interactive features and over 70 channels.

Those interested in the rapido service can register their interest on this page and fill out the form displayed after clicking the orange button on the page. We will be keeping an eye out on future developments on this service for more information, plans and release schedules.

Personal views: After having attended the launch event organised by GO, we have tested the fibre connection ourselves and the connection speed was amazing. Speedtest.net results managed to get easily above 200 Mbps download speed… very impressive! One must however keep in mind that a real life test would be able to provide the user a more realistic measurement. We will just have to wait and see. An IP TV was also set-up in a real home scenario and showed the full capabilities of the streaming HD channel with interactive features.
